Maerl and Granulometry MEDITS
Granulometry data were collected by box-corer during the Mediterranean Trawl Survey (MEDITS) between the years 2004-2008 (excluding 2006). This dataset were gathered from various stations (80 in total), and were classified as follows: coarse silt, medium silt and very coarse silt; and fine sand, medium sand and very fine sand. These data were gathered on DFA’s own initiative in order to gather baseline data about the substratum, which influences the distribution of the fishing resources within GSA 15. While maerl data was obtained from photos of the MEDITS stations sampled between 2005 and 2011 as well as Van veen Grab samples collected during the Mediterranean Trawl Survey (MEDITS) between the years 2004-2008 (excluding 2006). These data were gathered on DFA's own initiative in order to gather baseline data about the substratum, which influences the distribution of the fishing resources within the GSA 15.These data was included as part of the dataset used for one of the co-financed EU LIFE+ Funding Programmes - LIFE BaĦAR for N2K project. -
Major Roads for Noise Directive
This layer shows the major roads defined for Malta according to the requirements of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. These are the roads for which strategic noise maps are produced. -
MALTA Classification at Local Administrative Unit (LAU), Level 1
The local administrative units, abbreviated as LAUs, form a system for dividing up the economic territory of the European Union (EU) for the purpose of statistics at local level. They have been set up by Eurostat and they are compatible with NUTS. The LAU classification is equivalent to the classification of all Maltese localities into six districts by Malta Geographic Codes (MGC).At local level, two levels of LAU have been defined: The upper level (LAU1, formerly NUTS level 4)The lower level (LAU2, formerly NUTS level 5) -
MALTA Classification at NUTS 3 Level
The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) was established by Eurostat to provide a single uniform breakdown of territorial units for the production of regional statistics for the European Union. -
Malta European geostatistical 1km grid
This dataset series contains geographical grids of 1km grid cell size for Malta. The main attributes are a Grid ID coding the East and North coordinate of the lower left corner of each grid cell plus the hierarchy level plus the quad-tree level. And the INSPIREID of the lower grid cell corner. The grid has been created following the requirements of COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 1089/2010 of 23 November 2010 implementing Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards interoperability of spatial data sets and services and the INSPIRE Specification on Geographical Grid Systems - Guidelines. The grid can be used to represent all kinds of statistical and scientific values. The main application is the representation of demographic data (population). This 1km grid was provided by the Eurostat European Commission -
Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone
According to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set. -

MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Species Composition
The information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Plankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance. -
MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton Habitat Condition
The information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Phytoplankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. Surface chlorophyll-a levels can also be used to characterise pelagic habitats in oceanic waters of the Mediterranean Sea, on the basis of the importance of productivity in describing marine ecosystems and food availability. This dataset includes quantitative information including the density of phytoplankton in cells/l, chlorophyll-a in ug/l and the diatom/dinoflagellate ratio. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Anchoring and Mooring Hotspots
Indicative areas used for anchoring and mooring of vessels around the Maltese islands. The data was used in the assessment of MSFD descriptor D6C2 (physical disturbance to the seabed) -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Bunkering Areas
Boundaries of offshore bunkering areas and relocated waiting area for vessels. Activities within these zones are regulated through various legislation: Authority for Transport in Malta Act (Chapter 499 of the Laws of Malta) Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations (S. L. 499.12), Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Reporting Requirements Regulations (S. L. 499.34) Berthage and Anchorage Dues Regulations (S. L. 499.38), Berthing Regulations (S.
