According to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set.

The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance.

The NatDA formerly known as the Common Database on Designated Areas (CDDA) is more commonly known as Nationally designated areas, and is one of the agreed Eionet priority data flows maintained by EEA with support from the European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity. It is a result of an annual data flow through Eionet countries. In fact, Malta, being a member of the EEA, submits this report on an annual basis to fulfill this requirement. The EEA publishes the data set and makes it available to the World Database of Protected Areas (WDPA). The NatDA data can also be queried online in the European Nature Information System (EUNIS).

The submission of sites to the EC entails the preparation of a datasheet and a map for each site, that is for each proposed SCI and for each SPA, unless a proposed SCI has the exact boundary as an SPA; in the latter case only one datasheet is prepared comprising all relevant information.
