Area Designated For Hydrocarbon Exploration and Exploitation
The boundary used for the definition of seabed/subsoil is based on the area currently designated for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation without prejudice to Malta's continental shelf boundary. This incorporates the seabed/subsoil beneath the WFD Coastal Waters. The original data was provided by CSD in WGS 84 and subsequently transformed by ERA into ETRS89TM33. ERA has processed the data for reporting obligations emanating under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. -
Coastal and Marine Infrastructure as per SPED
This dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED) it shows the locations of dive sites and swimming Zones -
Designated Nitrate Vulnerable Zone for Malta
This layer designates the Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ). At present the whole of the Maltese Islands are designated as a NVZ, as per Article 3 of Council Directive 91/676/EEC. -
Discharge points for UWWT plants of the Maltese Islands
Discharge points of the three main urban waste water treatment plants in the Maltese Islands -
Enterprise Hubs
This dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). It shows the locations of industrial areas which have been designated as enterprise hubs by the SPED -
Environmental noise agglomeration
This layer shows the agglomeration defined for Malta according to the requirements of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. This is the area for which strategic noise maps are produced. -
Fisheries Management Zone and Internal Waters
The original data was provided by CSD in WGS 84 and subsequently transformed by ERA into ETRS89TM33. ERA has processed the data for reporting obligations emanating under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The water column boundary for MSFD purposes shall be taken as a boundary which extends to 25 nm without prejudice to Malta's jurisdiction beyond this limit. This incorporates the WFD Coastal Waters. -
Ground Water Body Malta
This dataset represents the mean sea level and perched groundwater bodies of the Maltese islands. -
Groundwater and Surface Water Bodies monitoring Stations for the WFD
This dataset represents the WFD monitoring stations for the purpose of status assessment in groundwater and surface water bodies -
Groundwater Protection Zone

Harbour Approach routes and Communication infrastructure
This dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). It shows the Harbour Approach routes and communication infrastructure -
Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone
According to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set. -
Marine area up to 25nm as covered by SPED
This dataset consists of the Maltese Islands maritime boundary of 25 nautical miles, which represents the outer limit of the coverage of the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). -
Marine facilities
This dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). It shows the locations of Spoil Ground, Bunkering areas and Aquaculture zones. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Anchoring and Mooring Hotspots
Indicative areas used for anchoring and mooring of vessels around the Maltese islands. The data was used in the assessment of MSFD descriptor D6C2 (physical disturbance to the seabed) -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Bunkering Areas
Boundaries of offshore bunkering areas and relocated waiting area for vessels. Activities within these zones are regulated through various legislation: Authority for Transport in Malta Act (Chapter 499 of the Laws of Malta) Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations (S. L. 499.12), Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Reporting Requirements Regulations (S. L. 499.34) Berthage and Anchorage Dues Regulations (S. L. 499.38), Berthing Regulations (S. L. 10.30), and Official Nautical Charts. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Offshore Spoil Ground
The dataset indicates the location of the designated spoil ground, where disposal of dredged material and inert uncontaminated geological material at sea takes place. Malta has one ‘offshore’ spoil ground located in the North Eastern part of Maltese waters. -
Official Trawling Zones - Amended 2012
Regulations are in place to spatially manage offshore trawling efforts within the FMZ: trawling within the 25 nautical mile zone can, according to legislation, only take place at designated sites (detailed in Annex Va of EC 1967/2006 and as amended in 2012). These trawlable areas were chosen when Malta joined the EU in 2004, and were based on an FAO study on the location of areas suitable for trawling in Maltese waters carried out in 1976 / 1977 (Giudicelli, 1978). In addition trawling is only allowed within the FMZ by vessels not exceeding an overall length of 24 m, and the overall capacity of the trawlers allowed to fish in the zone can not exceed 4 800 kW. Moreover, the total fishing effort of all vessels is not allowed to exceed an overall engine power and tonnage of 83 000 kW and 4 035 GT respectively, and the fishing capacity of any single vessel with a license to operate at less than 200 m depth can not exceed 185 kW. This data was utilised by one of the co-financed EU LIFE+ Funding Programmes - LIFE BaĦAR for N2K project. -
